On Saturday, Laura Pukstas led members in a great tutorial on the Quick Curve Ruler. Laura showed us several different types of quilts we can make with the ruler and then walked us through making our own Chic Star Block.
We also had several members bring their projects to show the group.

We will be making 1 Chic Star block. If you want to make more you will need more fabric. Laura will be providing the patterns for the blocks. Please cut the background fabric into 8- 4” x 8” rectangles and from the print fabric cut into 4- 4” x 8”.
After the demo, members are encouraged to work on their own projects, so bring your sewing machine and sewing/quilting projects to work on.
As always, please bring your completed modern projects and your BOM to share with the group.
If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

Our first ever quilting retreat was a resounding success!
We enjoyed sewing in Luther Heights’ brand-new lodge, staying in the nearby cabins, and being enveloped in the beautiful scenery of central Idaho.
Just a reminder that we will not be having our normal guild meeting this month. Instead we are excited to be hosting our first ever summer retreat at Luther Heights near Stanley, Idaho. Thanks Shelly, for sharing your tutorial on English Paper Piecing! We saw some inspiring EPP designs, received little hexagon kits, and learned lots of helpful tips.
We made quite a few heart blocks for the quilt we are making for #quiltsforpulse. We have plenty to work with, and will assemble them into a quilt at our July retreat.

Shelly will be giving us a short demo on English paper piecing hexagons. Every participant will receive a hexi starter kit!
The rest of the meeting will be spent making heart blocks for the quilt we will be making for #quiltsforpulse. If you hadn’t heard, the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is collecting quilts and blocks for victims who survived and families of victims who perished at the Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12. MQG members around the world are invited to participate. For more information about the quilt effort, read the Modern Quilt Guild post. This month we are going to be trying our hand at some improv with intent. We will be doing an improv round robin like we did last year (because it was so fun!) but this time with limits. Based on the exercise, Score for Floating Squares in Sherri Lynn Wood’s book Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters, it will be a fun way to try improv for the first time or play with your improv skills. By the way, our guild now owns this book, so feel free to let us know if you would like to borrow it!
How it works – the basic idea is that you will be stitching together your different sized, precut squares, using small filler fabric rectangles and squares as needed. We are going to add a little twist to this exercise and have everyone pass their container of fabric and improv piece to their neighbor. Each person will use your fabric to add to your improv piece. By the end of class you will have worked on everyone’s piece a few times and each person will end up with something completely unique!
