June 2016 Sew Day – Join Us!

When: Saturday, June 25, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

Join us for a busy meeting on Saturday!

Shelly will be giving us a short demo on English paper piecing hexagons. Every participant will receive a hexi starter kit!

The rest of the meeting will be spent making heart blocks for the quilt we will be making for #quiltsforpulse. If you hadn’t heard, the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is collecting quilts and blocks for victims who survived and families of victims who perished at the Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12. MQG members around the world are invited to participate. For more information about the quilt effort, read the Modern Quilt Guild post. The Boise Modern Quilt Guild will be making a quilt for #quiltsforpulse and we need your help! There are a couple ways to participate:

  • Bring a fat quarter (or more) of bright-colored fabric and your sewing machine to make heart blocks at our June meeting. Kona Snow will be provided for the block background and we will be following this easy tutorial to make 10” blocks: Heart Block by Cluck Cluck Sew. We’re aiming for quilt with a rainbow of colors, at least throw-sized but no larger than a twin.
  • Bring donated supplies (thread, batting, binding fabric, more bright fabric for heart blocks) to our June meeting that will be used for quilt assembly at our July retreat.

As always, please bring your completed modern projects and your BOM to share with the group.

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

  • Quick announcements
  • Show and share
  • Sewing on individual projects, and of course conversation (or tutorial/presentation if one is scheduled)

May 2016 Sew Day – a Recap

We had so much fun making our “Improv with Intent” blocks at our May Sew Day.

And check out what our members brought for Show and Share:

Join us for our May Sew Day – Improv with Intent

When: Saturday, May 28, 1 pm – 4 pm

Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

This month we are going to be trying our hand at some improv with intent. We will be doing an improv round robin  like we did last year (because it was so fun!) but this time with limits. Based on the exercise, Score for Floating Squares in Sherri Lynn Wood’s book Improv Handbook for Modern Quiltersit will be a fun way to try improv for the first time or play with your improv skills. By the way, our guild now owns this book, so feel free to let us know if you would like to borrow it!

How it works – the basic idea is that you will be stitching together your different sized, precut squares, using small filler fabric rectangles and squares as needed.  We are going to add a little twist to this exercise and have everyone pass their container of fabric and improv piece to their neighbor. Each person will use your fabric to add to your improv piece. By the end of class you will have worked on everyone’s piece a few times and each person will end up with something completely unique!

Please bring the following if you would like to participate:

  • Three different fabrics. One will be used as your “filler” fabric and the other two fabrics will be cut into squares in a variety of sizes (we will make time for cutting on Saturday). Note: you will want more of the filler fabric and a limited amount of the other two. How much just depends on how big of a project you want to work on.
    • This is where the intent come in: limiting the choice of fabric and choosing a theme – color, patterns or solids, etc.
  • A basket or box (i.e. shoe box, etc.) sturdy enough to pass around and large enough for your fabric squares and filler fabric.
  • Rotary cutter and mat – leave the ruler at home!
  • Sewing machine and accessories

As always, please bring your completed modern projects and your BOM to share with the group.

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

Save the Date – The weekend of July 22-24 we will be having our first modern quilting retreat! We will be up in Stanley at the Luther Heights Bible Camp. More information to come soon!

Modern Machine Quilting Workshop

We really enjoyed the modern machine quilting workshop given by Christa of christaquilts.com. She shared so many helpful quilting tips, graciously signed all our copies of her book, and even gave us a preview of her brand new book she co-authored with Angela Walters.

Workshop1

We quilt-doodled on a bunch of 10″ square quilt sandwiches with both straight-line quilting and free-motion quilting. It was so much fun! Here are Angela’s samples from the class:

Fun mini-retreat

What a fun mini-retreat on Saturday! We had many members come together to work on projects, as well as a few guests, which we always love.

February 2016 Sew Day – Join Us!

Where: Victory Branch Library, 10664 W Victory Rd, Boise, ID (Forrey Room downstairs) at the corner of Victory and Five Mile – Please note that this is a different location than where we normally meet.

Lindsie is even bringing her design wall, so if you have a project you’ve been wanting to layout or an idea you want to try on the wall, bring it!

As always, we want to see your completed projects and BOM, so bring those to share with the group.

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

By the way, we only have six openings left for Christa Watson’s Modern Machine Quilting with Style class on March 26. If you are interested, sign up here. Find a class description and more information on our post: Modern Machine Quilting with Style – a Workshop by Christa Watson.

Modern Machine Quilting with Style – a Workshop by Christa Watson

Modern Machine Quilting workshop with Christa Watson

We are excited to share with you that we are bringing in modern quilt designer and author Christa Watson for an all-day workshop!

About Christa:

Christa Watson is an award winning quilt maker and author of two machine quilting books. Her designs have been featured in several publications including Make Modern and QuiltCon magazines. She regularly teaches quilting workshops and is teaching at QuiltCon 2016 in Pasadena, CA. You can find Christa on social media @christaquilts or at christaquilts.com.

About the Modern Machine Quilting with Style workshop:

Take your quilts to the next level by adding depth and dimension to your quilts. The secret is learning to let go of perfection by practicing asymmetrical textures that require little to no marking. Gain confidence with walking foot wonders, then move on to free-motion favorites. Students will practice on sample “sandwiches” and may bring in their tops for a discussion of possible quilting ideas. Students should have a basic understanding of their sewing machines and know how to switch between feet easily.

  • When: Saturday, March 26, 2016, 10:00am – 4:30pm
  • Where: NEW LOCATION – Joann Fabric and Craft – 1085 N Milwaukee St. We will be in the upstairs classroom on the 2nd floor. Just take the elevator that’s located in the back of the store, near the restrooms.
  • Cost: $70 for Boise MQG members / $90 for non-members
  • Availability: 22 spots are available, first come first served. Sign-ups are open to Boise MQG members until 2/8/16, and any spots available after then will be open to non-members.
  • Required Supplies: (supply list) Please note that this supply list includes Christa’s book Machine Quilting With Style, available on Amazon for $21 hardcopy or $10 as an e-book.

To enroll in the workshop, please complete this Modern Machine Quilting with Style workshop form, which includes instructions on how to pay. Once payment is received, you will receive a confirmation email that your spot has been secured, along with a class supply list.
