We had some stunning quilts shared with us on Saturday, March 24th!
The Modern Quilt Guild defines modern quilts as ones that are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.
The following posts show examples of modern quilting from our members and other modern quilters.

February 2018 Sew Day – join us!
When: Saturday, February 24, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Victory Branch Library, 10664 W Victory Rd, Boise, ID (Forrey Room in basement)
* Note different location!
This month we will be working on individual projects so bring your sewing machine and sewing/quilting projects to work on.
As always, please bring your completed modern projects to share with the group.
If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.
Not familiar with how our meetings work? We typically follow this format:
- Quick announcements
- Show and share
- Sewing on individual projects, and of course conversation (or tutorial/presentation if one is scheduled)
After-Holiday Party
We celebrated the end of 2017 with an After-Holiday party where members showed off completed projects and exchanged zipper pouches.
#quiltsforvegas
Thanks to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild members who helped put together our donation for #quiltsforvegas!
A big shout out goes to Kathy Stockton, Nancy England, Betsy Johnson, Fay Hikida, Denise Arellano, Jeri Wood, Teri Brown and Carol Abbett for making this quilt happen. Special thanks to Fay for donating batting and quilting the quilt; Jeri for binding; and Teri for donating the backing fabric. All the colored fabric for the top was donated by Massdrop.
Congratulations!
Congrats to our Monochromatic Challenge participants! They brought home 3rd place in the Small Group Challenge at the Boise Basin Quilt Show.
Great Workshop!
We had a great time at the Fabulous Fat Quarter Quilts Workshop and Trunk Show with Kenna Ogg! Everyone left with blocks started for their quilts and a better understanding of color and fabric choice.
Lots of projects
We had a great time at the April Sew Day! Check out the photos below.
Modern Machine Quilting Workshop
We really enjoyed the modern machine quilting workshop given by Christa of christaquilts.com. She shared so many helpful quilting tips, graciously signed all our copies of her book, and even gave us a preview of her brand new book she co-authored with Angela Walters.
We quilt-doodled on a bunch of 10″ square quilt sandwiches with both straight-line quilting and free-motion quilting. It was so much fun! Here are Angela’s samples from the class:
And thanks, Lindsie, for showing Christa around Boise!
Some great totes!
Good food and beautiful totes were on the agenda Saturday. During our annual After-Holiday party 10 members exchanged handmade bags and it was amazing to see how much variety and talent there was. Thanks to everyone who made it so much fun!

We also had a few members bring some quilts to share.
Busy Sew Day!
