Check out the great view we had for our May Sew Day! With the threat of storms it was the perfect day to be inside sewing and sharing.
We even had a few members working on their mini quilt projects.
We felt incredibly lucky to have local artist Anna Webb speak to us on Saturday about her mosaic artwork. Her talk was very inspiring! We learned about her public artwork around Boise, her artistic process, and where she finds inspiration for her work. There were many correlations with modern quilting: the desire to make something tangible, pushing boundaries, inspiration based on architecture, landscapes, and shapes, as well as embracing the imperfections that celebrate the human touch in art. I think we all left that day invigorated. Anna also brought a few pieces of her work for us to look at and touch. Check out the pictures below.

During Show and Share we also got to see some great work by our members as well!
Unfortunately, we are going to have to postpone the applique tutorial originally scheduled for tomorrow. We hope to reschedule sometime in early 2015.
However, our sew day is still happening – just bring your sewing machine, supplies and a project to work on.
Congratulations to all our members who participated in the Boise Basin Quilt show. The modern quilts were very impressive! Thanks to all that submitted quilts, volunteered at the Boise Modern Quilt Guild table and worked to make our banner quilt.
The quilt show was our debut for the banner quilt and it looked awesome! It was the perfect way to advertise the spirit of our guild and everyone’s talents. If you didn’t have a chance to check it out at the show, we will have it at our October Sew Day.

We had a great meeting this month! We had several visitors who came to check out the guild as a result of the Idaho Statesman article that ran last Thursday. We even had three new members sign up – including our first junior member.
Two members brought their completed projects for the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge. The challenge ends this month!
We had lots of people bring projects to share and a very energetic sew day afterwards. Check out all the great projects!
During our May Sew Day Connie Emmen lead us through Spirals 101, a class where we learned to make a basic spiral using RaNae Merrill’s paper-piecing technique with transparent foundation paper. I think everyone agreed that the transparent paper made the piecing much easier. Always fun to learn new techniques!
If you took the class and didn’t finish your block, please bring it to our June Sew Day. We will collect the blocks and eventually make them into a baby quilt to donate to a local charity.
During Show and Share, Lindsie shared a quilt made for her by Angela, Christy, and Lori. The quilt was made as a thank you to Lindsie for designing the Boise Modern Quilt Guild logo. The pattern was Amy Butler’s “Thea’s Puzzle Quilt.”
Less than a week before we (Christy and Lori) leave for the Portland SewDown! We’ve never been to something like this and are very excited. What could be better than staying at a fancy hotel and quilting all weekend with like-minded folks in a great city like Portland? We’ve got a lot to do before we leave though. Over the next few days we”ll be busy preparing our fabric (three yards of scraps? How do you measure that?) for the workshops and gathering supplies.
The workshop Christy is most looking forward to is the Improv Round Robin taught by Sherri Lynn Wood. She loves improv piecing and is looking forward to doing it in a group. Lori is looking forward to learning new techniques with Julie Herman’s sidekick ruler.
