March 2018 Sew Day – Join Us!

When: Saturday, March 24, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd., Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

This month we will be working on making quilts for the refugee community here in Boise! Everyone who participates will be given a bundle of fat quarters that was donated by Massdrop to the BoiseMQG, as well as some coordinating solid fabric. Members will then make simple, quick quilts to be finished at following meetings. While the Agency for New Americans will accept any size quilt and you are welcome to make whatever size you like, we will be focusing on lap and twin sizes. We kindly ask that members provide the batting and backing fabric for the quilt(s) they make. If you need ideas as to what kind of quilt top you want to make at our meeting, visit our Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/boisemqg/charity-quilt-ideas/

The Massdrop fabric bundles are from Birch Organic Fabrics, including:

Bear Camp – 18 fat quarters

Old West Charm – 14 fat quarters

Farm Fresh – 20 fat quarters

As always, please bring your completed modern projects to share with the group.

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

After-Holiday Party

We celebrated the end of 2017 with an After-Holiday party where members showed off completed projects and exchanged zipper pouches.

#quiltsforvegas

Thanks to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild members who helped put together our donation for #quiltsforvegas!

A big shout out goes to Kathy Stockton, Nancy England, Betsy Johnson, Fay Hikida, Denise Arellano, Jeri Wood, Teri Brown and Carol Abbett for making this quilt happen. Special thanks to Fay for donating batting and quilting the quilt; Jeri for binding; and Teri for donating the backing fabric. All the colored fabric for the top was donated by Massdrop.

October 2017 Sew Day – Join Us!

When: Saturday, October 28, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Library! At Bown Crossing – 2153 E. Riverwalk Dr. *note different location*. We’ll be meeting in the David Eberle room.

This month we will be creating blocks for a quilt to donate to #quiltsforvegas. At the request of the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild we will be making the greyscale block from Cluck Cluck Sew. The Boise MQG will provide the colored fabric for the blocks, as well as the quilt back (thanks Massdrop!), but we need members to bring white, solid fabric for the background. We will set up cutting, sewing and ironing stations so we can whip out a quilt top quickly.

We also need volunteers for:

  • Newish quilt batting in good condition for a quilt about 48”x60” or larger
  • Quilting
  • Binding

We have limited space at the library this month and a quick deadline (quilt needs to be in Vegas by Nov. 15) so we ask that you bring machines and supplies to work on this project only. For more information about the project and to view the block, check out the website:

September 2017 Big Stitch Hand Quilting – Join Us!

When: Saturday, September 23, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

We are not meeting at the Julia Davis Park like we intended. It’s just too chilly and soggy.

This month we are doing something a bit different! We thought it would be fun to take our meeting outside and learn how to do big stitch hand quilting. Our instructor will be Billie Farley and she will give us a short tutorial followed by plenty of time for practice. We will email a supply list later this week. Make sure you bring a quilt or lawn chair to sit on and any quilting accessories that you might want to use, like tools, storage, or cutting mats!

Update: Here’s the supply list:

  • quilt sandwich that is basted together with pins or thread (choose lightweight batting that is recommended for hand quilting – Warm & Natural not recommended)
  • wooden quilting hoop that is more than an inch deep, and 14-20+ inches in diameter (Billie will bring a couple extra of these)
  • embroidery needle with a large eye
  • thread – Perle cotton #12 or #8 are great options
  • thimble – make sure it fits
  • finger cots or finger gloves (Billie will bring many of these)
  • small embroidery scissors

Also, we have some extra tote bags we’ll be selling for $10/each.

As always, please bring your completed modern projects to share with the group.
