July 2014 Sew Day – a Recap

Wow, what a great meeting this month! We learned about quilt photography and enjoyed seeing tons of quilts and sewn items for Show and Share.

Vicki Francis, a photography teacher at Capital High School, gave a great presentation on Photography 101. Vicki is an excellent teacher!  Her talk was so helpful.  For more photo tips, visit:

Check out all the great projects made by our members!

Join us for our monthly Sew Day!

When: Saturday, July 26, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

This month we will focus a bit on photography. We all like to take photos of our quilts, whether we are sharing them with friends and family, or posting them online. However, photography is not necessarily something that comes naturally to a lot of us. To help us learn more about the basics, member Vicki Francis will lead a short talk on Photography 101. She will also help us take photos of quilts/quilt tops that members will be entering into the quilt show. Bring your camera! Please note that taking photos of your quilt at the library is completely optional. If you want to take your own photos at home, that is perfectly acceptable.

Everyone is also welcome to bring individual projects to work on, so don’t forget your sewing machine and supplies. As always, please bring your completed projects to share with the group.

A few other items of interest:

  • If you have completed your project for the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge please bring it so we can all see what you made.
  • If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.
  • If you aren’t familiar with how our meetings work, we typically follow this format:
    • Quick announcements
    • Show and share
    • Sewing on individual projects, and of course conversation (or tutorial, if one is scheduled)

June 2014 Sew Day – A Recap

We had a great meeting this month! We had several visitors who came to check out the guild as a result of the Idaho Statesman article that ran last Thursday.  We even had three new members sign up – including our first junior member.

Two members brought their completed projects for the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge. The challenge ends this month!

We had lots of people bring projects to share and a very energetic sew day afterwards. Check out all the great projects!

Join us for our monthly Sew Day!

When: Saturday, June 28, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

After experimenting meeting at a different location last month (at Jo-Ann), we’ve decided to go back to our location at the Boise Public Library.

We will be working on individual projects this month so bring your sewing machine and a sewing/quilting project to work on. As always, please bring your completed projects to share with the group.

A few other items of interest:

  • If you took the Spirals 101 class last month, please bring your completed block. We will collect them and eventually compile them into a baby quilt to donate.
  • Christine will also be bringing fabric scraps to share with our group. She did a massive cleanout of her stash and many of the scraps are large pieces. She’ll be there around 3 pm, so stick around if you want to claim any free scraps!
  • If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

May 2014 Sew Day – Join Us!

Join us for our monthly Sew Day!

When: Saturday, May 24, 1pm – 4pm
Where: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft, 1085 N Milwaukee St, Boise ID (upstairs classroom)

For a couple months only, we are experimenting meeting at a different location – Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft on Milwaukee St, in a large room on the 2nd floor.  Just take the elevator that’s located at the back of the store, near the restroom.

This month we have a special treat!  One of our members, Connie Emmen, will lead members who signed up for “Spirals 101”, a class where students will make a basic spiral using RaNae Merrill’s paper-piecing technique with transparent foundation paper (see photo below).  All the blocks made in class will be stitched into a baby quilt that we will donate to a local charity.  Our first charity project – exciting!

Spirals

If you submitted your RSVP and are taking the class, please remember to bring:

  • $10.00
  • sewing machine
  • rotary cutter and mat
  • one fat quarter of a solid fabric in a pink or orange hue (to make the spiral)

Those that didn’t sign up for the class are still welcome to attend Sew Day, just bring your own project to work on.

As always, please bring your completed projects to share with the group! Also, if you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord.

Hope you join us!

April 2014 Sew Day – A Recap

What a great sew day! This was our second spent working on the banner quilt we are preparing for the quilt show in September. Members not only made blocks on Saturday afternoon, but several brought additional contributions from home. Thanks to everyone’s enthusiasm and hard work we now have 66 blocks!

The Michael Miller Challenge fabric was distributed to members that had signed up for the challenge. I think we all agreed it is the best fabric so far. If you were unable to pick up your fabric at the meeting we will have it at the May Sew Day. Remember – the project completion date has been extended to July 25, giving everyone an extra month to create their project.

We also shared some our completed projects. It was great to see everyone’s creativity on display.

When: Saturday, April 26, 1pm – 4pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

We have two things on the schedule:

  • If you signed up for the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge you can pick up your fabric. Super cute fabric – we can’t wait to see what you create!
  • Last month we made 32 blocks for our banner quilt. Half way there! Since we still need more, we are going to make more this month. See below for guidelines.

Banner Block Guidelines

  • Size: 6. 5” unfinished
  • Style: As long as it is modern, it is your choice. Check out our Pinterest board for ideas and tutorials.
  • Color or fabric requirements: None – just keep it modern!

If you would rather sew on your own project, bring it! No matter what you work on, it promises to be a productive afternoon.

As always, please bring your completed projects to share with the group! Also, if you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord.

March 2014 Sew Day – A Recap

March’s Sew Day was a lot of fun! We had a longer session to sew and talk and share our projects. We had a brief update about this summer’s Bogus Basin Quilt Guild Quilt Show that we are invited as guest guild to. We hope to have a lot of submissions from our guild members. Our goal is to enter at least 50 quilts. Boise Modern Quilt Guild members are allowed to enter up to two quilts for free, for either judging or exhibit only. (Additional quilts are $3 each.) They have even created a new Modern quilt category this year! You can read more about the particulars on our Quilt Show FAQ page.

We had a handful of new faces join us and it was fun to meet and talk with everyone! We also built and gathered 32 blocks for our Guild’s banner quilt. We are half way to our goal of 64! If you have built more blocks to add to our stack, bring them to the April Sew Day. We’ll have a longer Sew Day that day as well, to build more banner blocks. We hope to start building the center part and arrange the quilt sometime in May.

I am sorry I don’t remember everyone’s names! But the quilts were fabulous to see and get inspiration from. Thanks, everyone, for bringing your projects to share.
