March 2015 Sew Day – Join Us!

When: Saturday, March 28, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

Our March Sew Day is right around the corner! We will be working on individual projects this month so bring your sewing machine and sewing/quilting projects to work on. This will be a great time to catch up on those lingering projects you haven’t had a chance to get to. As always, please bring your completed projects and your BOM to share with the group.

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

Not familiar with how our meetings work? We typically follow this format:

  • Quick announcements
  • Show and share
  • Sewing on individual projects, and of course conversation (or tutorial/presentation if one is scheduled)

FsDBpaIb8fuTSapw1Cq1nA-IMG_0044We are in for an inspirational treat this Sew Day! Local mosaic artist Anna Webb will be joining us at the beginning of our meeting as our guest speaker. Some of you might be familiar with Anna as a reporter for the Idaho Statesman, but she is also a talented mosaic artist and will be speaking to us about the artistic intersection of mosaics and quilts. She has traveled the world to see and study mosaics and has created several beautiful mosaic art installations in Boise. She’ll be sharing photos from her travels, mosaic art that inspires her (lots of quilty inspiration, too!) and her thoughts on composition, color choice, and her creative process. This is one guild meeting not to miss!

Did you attend QuiltCon? If we have time after Anna’s presentation we would love for you to share your experience with the group (if you don’t want to, that’s okay too).

Also, don’t forget to bring your completed BOM and finished projects to share!

If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.

January 2015 Sew Day – A Recap

January’s Sew Day was full of creativity.  We worked on name tags and other sewing projects, while visiting away.

Members Sewing

Many of us did more visiting than sewing!  But that’s okay, right?

Angela Bowman Sewing Machine

Sew and Share was inspiring, as always.  Marilyn Shake shared 6 of her recent quilt finishes, earning quite a few tickets for the WiP’s & Wishes Challenge.  A few members have completed block 1 of the Moccasin Block of the Month.  Check out all the pictures!

Tired of using those throwaway name tags? We are too! This month we will spend our Sew Day making our own individual name tags to use during BMQG events. Bring your sewing machine, supplies, and some name tag ideas. If you need help in that area, we’ve set up a Pinterest board http://www.pinterest.com/boisemqg/name-tags/ with great ideas to get you started. We are looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

If you aren’t interested in making a name tag, you are welcome to bring a project to work on.

Also, don’t forget to bring your BOM and completed projects to share with the group.

Great party!

As you can tell from the pictures we had a great time on Saturday at the Boise Modern Quilt Guild After-Christmas party. The apron swap was a big hit! We had eight women participate and had a lot of fun watching as each person saw their new apron for the first time.

The amazing QuiltCon Charity Quilt that Laura Pukstas designed and quilted was showcased on Lori’s staircase during our party. Many thanks to Marilyn Shake, Gwen Smith, Darla Christensen, and Angela Bowman for helping with piecing, binding and everything else that went into the quilt. It is now in route to the MQG and will be showcased in February at QuiltCon with other charity quilts.

Several members also brought quilts and other items to share with the group. It’s always so fun to see how creative everyone is!

Yes, it is that time of year again! Since we are a non-profit we are required to hold an annual meeting to take care of a few quick – but important – items of business. We promise to make the business part go quick! Below is an outline of the meeting.

Business:

  • Membership: If you are interested in being a member of the Boise Modern Quilt Guild in 2015, we’ll be processing memberships.  If you can’t make the meeting please complete the membership form and mail your $20 dues to Lori Wambolt at 5582 E Stageline Dr, Boise ID 83716 by December 6, 2014. Checks should be made payable to Boise Modern Quilt Guild.
  • Financials: We will review our financial information – where money was spent in 2014 and what we expect our expenses to be in 2015.
  • Voting: We will vote on the Board of Directors. Our Board is currently comprised of: Christy Foltz-Ahlrichs, President; Angela Bowman, Vice President; Lindsie Bergevin, Secretary; Lori Wambolt, Treasurer.
    • A few rules about the vote:
      • At the meeting any member in good standing may nominate another person to the board with the second of another member.
      • To be qualified as an elected officer, a member must be in good standing, and have been active in the Guild for at least one year (with exception for the founding officers).
      • Renewing and new members are allowed to vote.
      • A member does not have to be present to be on the ballot, but you must be at the meeting to vote.
      • See the Board Position Descriptions and Bylaws for more information.

Fun:

  • Lindsie will lead us in a discussion on what types of functions we would like to see on our website.
  • As always, bring a project to work on!

October 2014 Sew Day – A Recap

October’s sew day began with the holidays! Carolyn Hughey shared two of her unique Christmas quilts with the group. Check out that quilting! We even learned about fabric weaving from our visitor, Nancy. She shared the project she has been working on and it was fascinating to see how two different fabrics can transform into one completely different fabric.

We also have a new junior member. Our second! Lori’s daughter Madelyn joined us for her first meeting. We are very excited to have her join our group.

A few items of business were announced:

  • Apron swap – At our annual after Christmas party (December 27) we will swap aprons. We will be emailing members a form to fill out so swap partners can learn a bit more about each other’s likes and dislikes. If you didn’t get the email with a link to the form, let us know. Deadline for filling out the form is November 9th.
  • If you have a blog or website related to quilting and or sewing let us know and we can post it on our website.
  • If you have quilting knowledge you would like to share with the group, contact us. We are always looking for guest speakers to lead a tutorial or lecture.

October 2014 Sew Day – Join Us!

Join us for our monthly Sew Day!

When: Saturday, October 25, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

This month Linda Vermette will teach us a bit about appliqué – glued and needleturn. Linda will demonstrate the glued technique and will then provide an opportunity for everyone to try their hand at the needleturn method.

If you are interested in participating, please bring:

  • 10” square of fabric
  • Needle and thread for hand sewing
  • Scissors

This tutorial will not take all the allotted time for the room, so bring a project to work on too. If you aren’t interested in the tutorial, no worries. Just bring something to work on and enjoy the company!

A few other items of interest:

  • If you have them, it’s always a good idea to bring a power strip and/or small extension cord as well.
  • We have some leftover free fabric scraps from when Christine donated earlier this summer. They’re yours for the taking!
  • If you aren’t familiar with how our meetings work, we typically follow this format:
    • Quick announcements
    • Show and share
    • Sewing on individual projects, and of course conversation (or tutorial, if one is scheduled)
  • After Christmas Party – Mark your calendars!  The Boise Modern Quilt Guild After Christmas Party will be December 27. We will have more details as the day gets closer! Since we had so much fun last year doing a swap we want to do another one. This Christmas we will swap aprons. Something most of us can use! Should be fun!

Hope you join us!

August 2014 Sew Day – A Recap

There was a lot of creativity in the room Saturday! Many people bought projects to share and it was fun seeing what everyone was working on.

A few items of business were also announced:

  • We will have a table at the quilt show at the end of September. We are looking for volunteers to sit at our table and chat with those interested in our guild and modern quilting. Let us know if you are interested.
  • Since the September Boise Modern Quilt Guild meeting is the same day as the quilt show there is no Sew Day in September.
  • Remember to turn in your quilts for the quilt show! You can do so on either September 13 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Quilt Crossing or September 18 at the Boise Basin Quilters membership meeting from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Boise Church of Christ, 2000 North Eldorado.
  • If you have a blog or website related to quilting and or sewing let us know and we can post it on our website.
  • If you have quilting knowledge you would like to share with the group, contact us. We are always looking for guest speakers to lead a tutorial or lecture!
