Sign Up for the July 24 Quilting Day Camp

Join us for our annual summer gathering of no-host modern quilting. We’re going al fresco and sewing outdoors!  Members, sign up by submitting the form you received by email. The retreat is limited to 40 attendees. Member registration ends June 18; non-member registration begins June 19

When: July 24, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (We’re starting early to beat the heat! You’re welcome to arrive as early as 7:30 a.m.)

Where: LDS church at 3200 Cassia St., Boise 83705 (We’ll meet at the picnic shelter at the rear of the church lot, so drive around back for parking and meeting.)

Cost: $40 per Boise MQG member | $65 non-members

  • Morning treats (baked goods, coffee, juice) and catered lunch is provided.
  • Those fabulous collections of swag are back! Plus, an expanded raffle ($1/ticket), so bring your cash and hope to win. Contributions to the swag and raffle come from the likes of Sewfinity, Quilt Crossing, Roost Books, Kitchen Table Quilting, QuiltCon, Cotton and Joy, Alison Glass, Pen and Paper Patterns, Aurifil, FreeSpirit Fabrics and more!
  • We will plan to be outdoors under a large picnic shelter.
  • This will be a “no-host” retreat, meaning that everyone brings their own sewing machines, necessary tools and projects to work on.
  • We’ll bring Sisters of the Hex supplies and see where the project stands.
  • The Get ‘er Done table will be set up. Find or bring fabric and scraps, orphan blocks and unfinished projects (at any stage).

April 2021 Guild Meeting Recap

We had another great meeting this month, starting with a few announcements:

  • May 7 Club Mod: Join us for Friday night sewing at Club Mod, May 7, 7-9 p.m. on Zoom. Then, pencil in the second Friday night of the month for upcoming Club Mod sewing parties. Sew on your projects, chair dance at your machine, and maybe win a prize!
  • May 22 In-person Meeting: We’re planning on meeting outdoors and in person beginning in May. Plan on wearing a mask and social distancing, and watch for more info on locations, including availability of tables, electricity or covered pavilions.  (We have more fun events planned for this year that are still in the early stages.)

Giving Back

  • Get ‘Er Done Projects: This is the place to facilitate quilts going from start to finish, and then find them a new home in the community. Thanks to Millissa Masters for taking on our first project — a batch of bee blocks she’s artfully assembled into a completed 64″ x 64″ quilt top. Cathy Rogers is donating batting, and if you’re interested in quilting or binding, let us know!
  • Sisters of the Hex: We are so thrilled with everyone’s response to help sew hexies! They’ll become part of a memorial quilt for past member Denise Arellano. If you need more hexi-making supplies, send us a note at [email protected]. Bring any completed hexi flowers to our May 22 meeting (did we mention it’s in person?).

March 2021 Guild Meeting Recap

Spring has arrived and we’re giddy about the sun, and what’s ahead for the BMQG. Our March meeting was full of information and updates. Here’s a recap of what happened:

Announcements

  • April 9 Club Mod: Join us for the launch party of Friday night sewing at Club Mod, April 9, 7-9 p.m. on Zoom. Then, pencil in the second Friday night of the month for upcoming Club Mod sewing parties. Sew on your projects, chair dance at your machine, and maybe win a prize!

  • Have you ever wondered if your quilt was “modern” or “modern enough”? Well, you’re not alone. To help demystify the topic, we’re taking a few moments at each meeting to talk about characteristics that help define modern quilting. This week we looked at quilts that use bold colors and prints. Giving Back

  • Get ‘Er Done: We’re keen to share our quilting with others in need, while helping members finish projects. At future meetings, we’ll take time for Get ‘Er Done Projects — a virtual or actual table to facilitate quilts going from start to finish. So, if you’re only interested in making quilt tops, this is the place to let others know, and they can take it to the next step or to the finish. From there, we’ll provide a list of organizations on our website that can use the quilts.
  • Sisters of the Hex: You’re invited to help sew hexies that will become a memorial project for past member Denise Arellano. Find out more here.

March 2021 Meeting – join us!

2020 Annual Meeting – Join Us

Please join us for our virtual Annual Guild meeting!

Join us Saturday, December 5 at 1 pm for our monthly guild meeting, where we will be using Zoom again to conduct our meeting. Please note that we are combining our November and December meetings. Instead of meeting in both November and December, we will meet December 5. Our annual after-holiday party will be January 23.

December 5th Meeting Agenda:
For the meeting itself, we’ll cover the following:

  • Check in
  • Annual Meeting Tasks
  • Show and Tell: Show off our modern projects and share what we’re working on.
  • Virtual Sew Day

Annual Meeting Business:
Since we are a non-profit we are required to hold an annual meeting to take care of a few quick – but important – items of business. We promise to make the business part go quick! Below is an outline of the meeting as well as some other announcements.

  • Dues: This year you will have two options for taking care of your membership: 1) go to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild Membership page and use the PayPal option to pay your $20 dues online, or 2) you may mail your $20 dues to Shelly Harshman at 1196 W Bear Track Drive Meridian ID 83642. Checks should be made payable to Boise Modern Quilt Guild. Please have your dues in by December 8, 2020.
  • Financials: We will review our financial information – where money was spent in 2020 and what we expect our expenses to be in 2021.
  • Voting: This year brings a few changes to voting due to COVID, as well as some changes to our Board of Directors.
    • Since we cannot vote in person we need to amend our bylaws to allow for us to vote virtually. Below is the language we will vote on:
      • Voting can be done by either paper ballot or digitally. After voting, the ballots must be tallied (or the vote must be officiated and verified) by two members in good standing who are not in consideration for an officer position. Virtual voting results may be automatically tallied by either the online platform used at the meeting or via an online survey platform and shared with members. Screenshots or saving the results of the poll digitally is acceptable.
    • We will then vote virtually on the Board of Directors. Our Board is currently comprised of: Christy Foltz-Ahlrichs, President; Angela Bowman, Vice President; Lindsie Bergevin, Secretary; Sally Bradley, Treasurer. However, this year Christy and Angela are not running for board positions. Therefore the board has nominated the following members to be on the ballot and they have all graciously accepted:
      • President – Lindsie Bergevin
      • Vice President – Darla Christiansen
      • Secretary – Cassie Koerner
      • Treasurer – Sally Bradley (incumbent)
    • A few rules about the vote:
      • At the meeting any member in good standing may nominate another person to the board with the second of another member.
      • To be qualified as an elected officer, a member must be in good standing, and have been active in the Guild for at least one year (with exception for the founding officers).
      • Renewing and new members are allowed to vote.
      • A member does not have to be present to be on the ballot, but you must be at the meeting to vote.

Annual swap:
At our virtual January 23 after-holiday party we will exchange fabric postcards.We found this great tutorial by Sarah Ruiz and thought it was perfect for our pandemic times. And, who doesn’t love to get mail?! Check out ideas and instructions: Tutorial: How to Make Quilted Fabric Postcards. More information and a sign up form will follow in a separate email.

Zoom Guidelines

  • If you haven’t been able to join us the past few months, we promise Zoom is really easy to set up! If you haven’t done this before, we recommend that you do the following ahead of time to make sure you have it set up correctly before it’s time to meet.
  • You’ll need to choose a device with a camera, microphone and speakers. This could be a computer, tablet or phone. Keep in mind that some computers don’t have a microphone built in, so by testing ahead of time, you can decide which device would work best.
  • Next, follow this link (to be emailed) and it will walk you through downloading and installing the Zoom app. You’ll be prompted to create a free account but once you do so, you won’t need to log in again.
  • Then on Saturday Dec. 5 at 1 pm, come back to your email, click on the link again and it’ll bring you right into our meeting.

Here’s a few best practices for our virtual guild meeting:

  • Plug your computer or device into a power source
  • Use a headset if you are in a crowded or noisy space
  • Mute your microphone when not actively speaking
  • Be aware of your surroundings and behavior (We can see you!)
  • Add questions/comments in the “Chat” section to be addressed by moderators
  • Use the “Raise hand” button if you would like to address the group
  • Make comments short and succinct, mute for responses
  • Let us know if you have any questions. We are looking forward to it!

2020 After-Holiday Party – Join Us

Mark your calendars! The Boise Modern Quilt Guild will be hosting our annual After-Holiday Party on January 25, from 1-3 p.m. Saturday’s festivities will include treats and our table runner swap!

Please bring a treat to share with the group.

Table Runner Swap
We are excited to see what kind of table runners everyone has made for their swap partner! If you are participating in the swap, please bring your completed, wrapped table runner on Saturday to exchange.

Sew and Share
If you were lucky enough to receive a handmade sewn or quilted gift this holiday season, or have a completed modern project, please bring it on Saturday.

2020 Dues
If you haven’t paid your 2020 dues, please go to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild Membership page and use the PayPal option to pay your $20 dues online. 2019 Boise MQG Retreat

The 2019 Boise MQG Retreat – Join Us!

Join us for our annual weekend of “no-host” modern quilting, being in the mountains, and enjoying all the natural beauty Stanley has to offer.

When: August 9-11 (You are welcome to arrive anytime after 2:00 p.m. Friday August 9, and stay through 3 p.m. Sunday August 11)

Where: Luther Heights Bible Camp – Stanley, Idaho (Location on Google Maps)

Cost: $100 per Boise MQG member | $120 non-members 

  • The retreat is limited to 25 attendees. After June 16 we will open the retreat to non-members.
  • Meals are included (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
  • Our guild will be quilting in the spacious lodge/dining hall.
  • This will be a “no-host” retreat, meaning that everyone brings their own projects to work on, sewing machines and necessary tools.
  • We will bring some extension/power cords, but you may want to bring your own just in case.
  • Our area’s Gammill dealer will be attending our retreat, and she is bringing two longarm quilting machines for us to use! Those interested will receive a brief training session on how to use the machine, as well as assistance whenever needed during the retreat. A collection of somewhat neutral threads will be available for use. If you’d like to quilt a quilt top during the retreat, bring:
    • quilt top/runner no more than 75″ wide (length doesn’t really matter). It’s not recommended to bring your prized project that is going in the quilt show – a project to practice on is perfect!
    • backing that measures 2-3″ larger on all 4 sides than the top
    • batting of your choice. Or you can purchase 80/20 Hobbs 96″-wide for about $6 per yard.

Accommodations: 

  • Cabins with bunk beds – each cabin sleeps up to twelve people
  • Each cabin has a bathroom.
  • Please bring your own bedding (sleeping bag, foam pad, pillows, twin sheet, etc.), towels and toiletries, as well as any recreational gear. There will be hiking, swimming in Alturas Lake, etc. available if you want to enjoy the great outdoors.

A few things to note:

  • We may be sharing the camp with another group, but other than at meal times, we should be to ourselves.
  • It is Luther Height Bible Camp’s regular practice to have Christian grace before all meals.
  • The Boise Modern Quilt Guild will not be arranging transportation. Please feel free to make carpool arrangements amongst yourselves.
  • While adult beverages are allowed, the camp asks that all “exercise great discretion and prudence in this regard.”
  • You may bring your own snacks/food.
  • Sorry, no pets.
