Sherri Lynn Wood Workshop: Bias Strip Piecing on the Curve

We are excited to share with you that we are bringing improvisational patchwork quilter Sherri Lynn Wood to Boise for a two-day Bias Strip Piecing on the Curve workshop!

About Sherri:
Sherri is an interdisciplinary artist based in Oakland, CA. Her 2015 publication The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting & Living Courageously (Abrams) provides frameworks for creative exploration, along with practical instruction in stitching techniques and color theory. Sherri teaches and speaks about improvisational patchwork and flexible patterning at art and craft schools, guilds, and conferences nationally and abroad. She will also be the featured speaker at QuiltCon 2019. You can find Sherri on social media @sherrilynnwood or at www.sherrilynnwood.com.

About the workshop:
Get your bias-strip curve on and celebrate your mistakes! Learn the innovative ruler-free technique of bias-strip piecing on the curve, how to troubleshoot and flatten internal bubbles as they arise. Learn to create wedge-curves along with a variety of options for utilizing both techniques in fixed patterns or improvised compositions. This is an advanced technique that takes time to master, pushing you to the brink of beginner’s mind. Imagine the possibilities! All skill levels welcome.

2017 Annual Meeting and Sew Day – Join Us!

When: December 2, 2017, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

Yes, it is that time of year again! Since we are a non-profit we are required to hold an annual meeting to take care of a few quick – but important – items of business. We promise to make the business part go quick! Below is an outline of the meeting as well as some other announcements.

A few changes for your calendar:
We are combining our November and December meetings. Instead of meeting November 25 and December 23, we will meet December 2. Our annual after-holiday party will be January 27 at our regularly scheduled sew day.

Annual swap:
At our January after-holiday party we will exchange zipper pouches. We emailed members a form to fill out so swap partners can learn a bit more about each other’s likes and dislikes. The last day to complete the form is 12/2/17 and we will let you know who your swap partner is a day or two after that. Zip pouches will be exchanged at our After-Holiday party on 1/27/18. Need ideas for making a zip pouch? Visit our Zip Pouches Pinterest board.

December 2nd meeting

Business:

  • Dues: If you are interested in being a member of the Boise Modern Quilt Guild in 2018, we’ll be processing memberships. If you’d like to take care of your membership beforehand, or if you can’t make it to the meeting, please go to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild Membership page and use the PayPal option to pay your $20 dues online. Or you may mail your $20 dues to Shelly Harshman at 1969 S Wilde Creek Way, Boise ID 83709. Checks should be made payable to Boise Modern Quilt Guild. Please have your dues in by December 2, 2017.
  • Financials: We will review our financial information – where money was spent in 2017 and what we expect our expenses to be in 2018.
  • Voting: We will vote on the Board of Directors. Our Board is currently comprised of: Christy Foltz-Ahlrichs, President; Angela Bowman, Vice President; Lindsie Bergevin, Secretary; Lori Wambolt, Treasurer.
    • A few rules about the vote:
      • At the meeting any member in good standing may nominate another person to the board with the second of another member.
      • To be qualified as an elected officer, a member must be in good standing, and have been active in the Guild for at least one year (with exception for the founding officers).
      • Renewing and new members are allowed to vote.
      • A member does not have to be present to be on the ballot, but you must be at the meeting to vote.
      • See Position Descriptions of Board Members for more information.

Fun:

    • Learn about some of the activities that are planned for 2018.
    • As always, bring a project to work on and your modern projects to show off!

#quiltsforvegas

Thanks to the Boise Modern Quilt Guild members who helped put together our donation for #quiltsforvegas!

A big shout out goes to Kathy Stockton, Nancy England, Betsy Johnson, Fay Hikida, Denise Arellano, Jeri Wood, Teri Brown and Carol Abbett for making this quilt happen. Special thanks to Fay for donating batting and quilting the quilt; Jeri for binding; and Teri for donating the backing fabric. All the colored fabric for the top was donated by Massdrop.

October 2017 Sew Day – Join Us!

When: Saturday, October 28, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Library! At Bown Crossing – 2153 E. Riverwalk Dr. *note different location*. We’ll be meeting in the David Eberle room.

This month we will be creating blocks for a quilt to donate to #quiltsforvegas. At the request of the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild we will be making the greyscale block from Cluck Cluck Sew. The Boise MQG will provide the colored fabric for the blocks, as well as the quilt back (thanks Massdrop!), but we need members to bring white, solid fabric for the background. We will set up cutting, sewing and ironing stations so we can whip out a quilt top quickly.

We also need volunteers for:

  • Newish quilt batting in good condition for a quilt about 48”x60” or larger
  • Quilting
  • Binding

We have limited space at the library this month and a quick deadline (quilt needs to be in Vegas by Nov. 15) so we ask that you bring machines and supplies to work on this project only. For more information about the project and to view the block, check out the website:

As always, please bring your completed modern projects to share with the group!

Congratulations!

Congrats to our Monochromatic Challenge participants! They brought home 3rd place in the Small Group Challenge at the Boise Basin Quilt Show.

September 2017 Big Stitch Hand Quilting – Join Us!

When: Saturday, September 23, 1 pm – 4 pm
Where: Boise Public Library, 715 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID (Marion Bingham Room on 3rd floor)

We are not meeting at the Julia Davis Park like we intended. It’s just too chilly and soggy.

This month we are doing something a bit different! We thought it would be fun to take our meeting outside and learn how to do big stitch hand quilting. Our instructor will be Billie Farley and she will give us a short tutorial followed by plenty of time for practice. We will email a supply list later this week. Make sure you bring a quilt or lawn chair to sit on and any quilting accessories that you might want to use, like tools, storage, or cutting mats!

Update: Here’s the supply list:

  • quilt sandwich that is basted together with pins or thread (choose lightweight batting that is recommended for hand quilting – Warm & Natural not recommended)
  • wooden quilting hoop that is more than an inch deep, and 14-20+ inches in diameter (Billie will bring a couple extra of these)
  • embroidery needle with a large eye
  • thread – Perle cotton #12 or #8 are great options
  • thimble – make sure it fits
  • finger cots or finger gloves (Billie will bring many of these)
  • small embroidery scissors
